Artist of the Day: Dan Tobin Smith

The artist of the day is Dan Tobin Smith, a photographer from the UK. I discovered him when I was researching the artist behind Jay-Z’s “The Bluprint 3” album artwork. I was drawn to the cover because it consists of a multitude of white instruments with simple red lines in the center. It took me a bit to realize that the red lines are actually red instruments that were obviously placed with the intent of making the lines. A lot of Tobin’s work features this type of set up – a solid background of objects with a shape or letter made of a different color of objects. And the awe-inspiring thing is that he does all this by hand! Not only does he do still life, but he also does landscapes and installations. I like his imagery because sometimes its like playing “I Spy”. I’m also digging his work because I admire artists who’s works require a great deal of preparation.

Check him out!
