You must check out this artwork by Ben Tour (I love his amazing, edgy watercolors)
A toddler asks what’s life like in the womb?? (obviously, our fascination with life begins at quite an early age)
Another awesome blog – Nuvany Nice (love this girl’s style and fashion coverage!)
Grupo Vibra (The site is in Spanish, but their collection of retro radios is fire)
Why I love cats (I probably shouldn’t admit this, but I actually teared up over this!)
Found this little survey at a blog I can’t remember…I wish I could ’cause it had a bunch of neat little survey things…anyway here’s one I thought would be fun to fill out…
2. Have you ever played a team sport?
3. If you were a bug, what kind would you be?
4. Where on your body is the worst place to get sunburned?
5. Are you happy?
6. People are always abbreviating..are there any abbreviations that make your skin crawl when people use them?
7. Do you love where you live..or could you live anywhere?
8. What, if any, extreme measures do you go to to keep yourself from overeating when you’re full?
Extreme measures? Well nothing extreme, but I do remind myself that overeating gives me a “tummy” which tends to look really funny on slender ladies like myself, so I just think of that! It never works though, lol – I love food!
Have a good weekend, you guys!
I’ve got a great abstract painter and illustrator today – Emil Holmer. I wanted to feature him because I love his use of color and I like the complexity of his work. Holmer hails from Sweeden and has exhibited all over the world. He also does sculpture work as well.
I like the somewhat gritty quality in these works…amazing!
This collection of photographs by Valeria H are really striking to me. They capture the still quality of unmade beds – which I think is really intimate…
If you think about it, beds are a really poignant part of life. We regenerate in them (yay, sleep!), we seek them out when times are rough (how many people have cried themselves to sleep?), we nurture relationships in them (I throughly enjoy watching movies with my best friend or my sister in bed), we learn in them (dreams can tell you things if you pay attention), and of course we create life in them (literally, I mean…). Beds exhibit a vulnerable quality to me and I think these photos capture that.
They also remind me Todd Hido’s “Homes At Night” series I featured awhile back. I’m so drawn to images that capture mankind at it’s most bare – these are great pieces of work.
I love M.I.A.’s music because it’s bold and political, yet doesn’t sacrifice crazy amazing production to make a statement. She’s been on a bit of a hiatus, and for a good reason – she’s not just hot anymore, but now she’s a hot mama! M.I.A.’s back though, with a new album, video for the single “Born Free” (which is thought-provoking and disturbing), and a magazine cover for Complex Magazine…
I love the colors and styling of this shoot. She’s so cool. I could totally have a good time with her discussing everything from the state of the world today to fashion – hell yeah!
I’ve got an ultra dreamy designer to share today, the Portland based Makool. This couple sells one of a kind handmade pieces of everything from svelte jackets to kitschy home adornments. The garments are super feminine, but just quirky enough to be unique.
I love that they metion when a garment is made from a textile remnant becuase it reminds me of what I ususally do with my fabric stash. Great work!
These Louboutin kicks and slip-ons go hard for this upcoming fall. These are mens’ but I could definitely get down with the leopard printed studded pair…here are the others ones I’m loving…
Those zebra print studded ones are amazing too! Wow, I’d totally rock those with a pencil skirt and a bad ass blouse. Go here to check out the rest.
I tend to play music based upon things like the weather and my mood and since the weather has been amazing here in Mpls, I’ve had my iPod on my “Kitsch” playlist which consits of artists like The Ting Tings, M.I.A., Passion Pit, Jamiroquai, Marina & the Diamonds…and two of my current faves – Santigold & VV Brown.
If you don’t know by now, my taste in music is pretty eclectic, so I love discovering artists that are unique and talented – and VV and Santigold definitely are. I’m so digging both their styles of music, VV Brown because she’s got a great blend of retro pop and Santigold because her indie punk sound is super infectious. Plus, I love the fact that these are two Black women that are making music in genre’s “not expected” of them. They both seem really creative and unique and I like that becuase they’re way more easy to relate to (for me anyway) than someone like Rihanna.
VV Brown is from the UK and has been a rising star as of late due to her song writing skills and catchy tunes. You’ve probably heard one of her songs on Desperate Housewives or CSI:NY. She sort of reminds me of Janelle Monae (whom I also love).
Santigold is from right here in The States and I discovered her after hearing her song “Lights Out” in a Budweiser commercial. I instantly was hooked and I’ve had her 2008 self-titled album in heavy rotation ever since. She fromted a rock band (Stiffed) in the mid 00’s whose music I also enjoy.
I wanted to share these two artists with you guys so that you could discover them (if you haven’t already) or just agree with me about how are awesome they are (if you have discovered them), LOL. Serously though, if you can appreciate all types of music, check them out!
Totally digging today’s designer – the amazing Susanita. Why you ask? Becuase she combines everything I love about art: color, collage, fashion images, and interest. She has done everything from magazine editorals to fashion branding and her uique style of “collagistrations” are instantly recognizable one you get to know her work.
Susanita is a Chilean transplant that currently works in Brooklyn. She now does art direction for many different aesthetics and industries…and regardless of what she does, it’s super amazing!
I was making my bed the other day when I realized that I need more sheet sets. I used to buy a new set every couple of months, but that sort of stopped once I got out of school. Luckily, these 3 sets below have definitely caught my eye and renewed my love for “bedclothes”..
1)Nate Berkus Lattice Sheet Set
…Because I love the yellow set – it’s so “funky nautical” to me
2) Starstruck Sheet Set (by Delias)
…Because I love anything dealing with space…these are a little on the juvenille side, but they’re fun and colorful, so I like ’em!
3) Pyramids Azure Set by Dwell Studio
…Because it’s classic and geometric…win!
Since I’m trying to kill time at work before I clock out for the day, I figured I’d share the top 3 things on my mind at this very second…
…Because I have my final fitting before tech tonight. I have 3 dresses to sew and a ton of things to make alterations on. I’m beyond tired (I almost nodded off in a meeting today) and I’m pretty sick of my sewing room being a complete disater. Basically, I’m tired of my mind and time being consumed by the show. That being said, I am extremely excited for our debut next week and I know that deep down inside, I do love what I’m doing and I care tons for the show – I suppose it’s just like when you’ve spent like every waking hour with your significant other for like a week (and trust me, I’ve done this)…even though you love ’em to pieces, you probably just want a bit of me time – even if it’s just for an hour. That sums up how I’m feeling about the show at this point.
Which leads me to #2…
2) An Old Friend
…Because we’ve been talking and texting way more than we have in the last few months. It would be a lie to say that I don’t miss them…because I have missed them. And everytime we reconnect it’s so extremely comfortable…amongst other convoluted emotions and feelings…We met under the guise of one of us leaving and now that I’m the one that left FL, they decided to move back to where I was…all that made our timing really screwed up as far as dealing with how well we happened to click…I really hope they come to visit me when I move to California…
Which leads me to the final thought…
3) California Move
…Because I’m getting scared since it’s only 3 months away. I’m afraid the only thing I’ll have going out there is money…no job, no apartment, nothing! Well I suppose that’s a bit of a hyperbole, I will be going out there at the beginning of August to secure housing and whatnot, but there are so many unknowns…and now they’re becoming more and more apparent. It will be the first time I will truly have to be self sufficent – paying ALL of my own bills and trying to find a job lucrative enough to support it. Add on top of that my plans to “make it” as a Costume Designer (one of the main reasons why I’m moving to L.A.), and I’m just starting to feel my dreams get a little more grounded. I’m super excited for the future and I know I’m going in the right direction, but still…I’m not afraid to admit that I am a bit frightened of all the unanswered questions.
Life’s a crazy ride, ain’t it!
